Education

Destiny is no matter of chance. It is a matter of choice. It is not a thing to be waited for; it is a thing to be achieved.”  —William Jennings Bryan

The quality and pace of any country’s socio-economic development is largely a reflection of the education system of that particular country. To achieve the mission of the OCS, each learner will be equipped with basic knowledge and skills necessary for daily living, adjustment to societal, economic and political changes, good physical and mental health, and productive work and peaceful living ethics. The Primary and Secondary curriculum, offered in the OCS will be aligned to the Uganda National Aims of Education.

Each curriculum segment takes into account the fact that Primary education is the first level of formal education and often the last chance for children to equip themselves with basic and vital practical skills that will enable them to earn a living. In this way, the curriculum aims at enabling the learners to contribute to the welfare of their community.

Throughout the curriculum, emphasis has been put on the development of functional literacy and numeracy, effective communication skills in local languages; as well as English, appreciation of cultural diversity, acceptance of variety in beliefs and social values, and a sense of national identity.

Purpose & Aims of Educational Program / Primary & Secondary School

The curriculum has been designed to address the national aims and objectives articulated by the government of Uganda. Key elements are as follows:

  1. to enable individuals to acquire functional, permanent and developmental literacy, numeracy, and communication skills in English, Kiswahili, and at least one Ugandan language;

  2. to develop and maintain sound mental and physical health;

  3. to instill the values of living and working cooperatively with other people and caring for others in the community;

  4. to develop and cherish the cultural, moral, and spiritual values of life and appreciate the richness that lies in our varied, diverse cultures and values;

  5. to promote understanding and appreciation for the protection and utilization of the  natural environment, using scientific and technological knowledge and skills;

  6. to develop an understanding of one’s rights and responsibilities for the purpose of positive participation in civil matters;

  7. to acquire a variety of practical skills for enabling one to make a living in a multi-skilled manner;

  8. to develop an appreciation for the dignity of work and for making a living by one’s honest efforts;

  9. to equip the child with the knowledge, skills, and values of responsible parenthood;

  10. to develop skills in management of time and respect for private and public property;

  11. to develop the ability to use the problem-solving approach in various life situations;

  12. to develop skills in using technology in all curriculum areas;

  13. to develop discipline and good manners; and

  14. to develop mastery of the pre-requisites for continuing education

Curriculum Goal

Students graduating from O/C School shall possess the skills and abilities needed to be successful in the community as a responsible worker and citizen and/or shall possess the skills and abilities to continue their education at the university  level.

Strategic Plan

The Primary and Secondary education curriculum will be produced in two segments, core studies and enrichment studies. The core subjects will consist of four mandatory subjects:

  • English
  • Integrated Science
  • Mathematics and;
  • Social Studies

The enrichment subjects will consist of: Mother Tongue and one foreign language, Music, Dance, and Drama, Physical Education, Religious Education, Integrated Production Skills (Agriculture, Business and Entrepreneurship, Education, and Art and Technology) as recommended in the national curriculum of Uganda. The curriculum will be supported by the creation of a library/media center. This center shall possess both print media and visual/technology media, which will not require extended/sophisticated infrastructure.

In a cultural atmosphere where gender differences and patriarchy leave women with deficiencies in many areas, girls become empowered and learn about positive self-esteem. These girls will be raised to meet their God given potential that culture, society and villages will not be able to take from them.

We feel very privileged to be a part of this time in history where destiny is changing the history of Africa for these precious little ones. We are going in as God’s people to serve God’s children. Our team is multiracial, international, and made up of people of all age groups and from all walks of life.
